🌕 What am I looking at?

This is a curved digital twin of the lunar south pole.

The terrain is built from real elevation (DEM) data and bent to match the Moon’s curvature (radius ≈ 1737 km).
Lighting simulates low-angle solar illumination typical of polar regions, where the Sun never rises high above the horizon.

☀️ Sun controls

Manual mode:
Directly control Sun direction.
• Azimuth → direction around horizon
• Elevation → height above horizon

Lunar site mode:
Sun is computed from terrain latitude.
• Hour angle → rotates Sun around horizon
• Declination → seasonal tilt (small effect at poles)

At the lunar poles, the Sun circles the horizon rather than rising and setting.

📐 Base view modes

Ortho: real surface imagery
Color DEM: elevation with spectral coloring
Gray DEM: elevation only (best for shape)
Flat Gray: no texture → best for shadow analysis

For illumination studies, use Flat Gray or Gray DEM.

🔷 Hex overlay

The terrain is divided into hexagonal analysis cells.

Hover a hex to see:
• Elevation (meters)
• Slope
• Traversability

Used for landing site selection, rover navigation, and ISRU planning.

🌑 PSR (shadow regions)

Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSRs) receive little or no sunlight.

These areas are critical for:
• Water ice deposits
• Thermal stability
• Resource extraction scenarios

🌍 Curvature

The terrain is curved using the Moon’s radius.

This creates realistic:
• horizon drop
• crater geometry
• large-scale perception
